ROCHESTER – A high school wrestler was shot and a man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the Stewartville High School parking lot early Friday morning, according to law enforcement.

The shootings happened around 5 a.m. as a bus was getting ready to transport the school’s wrestling team, Olmsted County Sheriff Kevin Torgerson said at a news conference.

The student was taken to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery and was in critical but stable condition. The adult died at the scene.

Authorities were not releasing names or ages of the two. It’s unclear why the adult male was at the high school, they said.

About 40 wrestlers and coaches were supposed to travel, Torgerson said, adding that most of the students on the bus didn’t know what happened. Several people heard a gunshot and found a member of the wrestling team injured.

Torgerson praised coaches for helping the victim and keeping students safe.

Authorities said they are not sure what the adult’s relationship is to the victim, but the shooting didn’t initially appear to be random.

Torgerson called for privacy for the family and asked people not to spread misinformation or rumors on social media.

“We need to heal and move on, and take care of the people who’ve been affected,” he said.

The sheriff added that shootings are “very rare” in the Stewartville area.

Administrators canceled classes at the school Friday. Superintendent Belinda Selfors said the district will make support available for students and staff over the weekend, as well as when school resumes next week.

“This is an incredible, difficult day for our community,” Selfors said. “I ask that we show grace and kindness, avoid speculation and keep supporting one another.”

Stewartville, a town of about 7,000, is about 12 miles south of Rochester.
