• Destination was Zup's Fishing Resort and Canoe Outfitters on Lac la Croix, on the Minnesota-Ontario border.• To get there, we drove about five hours from the Twin Cities to Crane Lake, Minn., and from there took a jet boat through Crane Lake, Sand Point Lake and the shallow Loon River to Lac la Croix. The boat was hauled over two rail portages en route. Private boats also can make the trip.
Dennis Anderson's trip/if you go
• Zup's sits on the Canadian side of Lac la Croix and is owned by Mark and Kathy Zup of Ely. Mark's late father, Bill, owned the camp previously. Its original location was in what is now the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
• Zup's is a popular starting point for canoeists entering the BWCA and Quetico Provincial Park. But on this trip, we stayed in a cabin at the resort and fished from there. Many day-paddling trips into wilderness lakes can be taken from the resort, as well as fishing excursions onto Lac la Croix.
• Minnesota and Ontario fishing licenses are needed to fish the area, where smallmouth bass are just now on their beds and being taken with surface lures.

None of the boat’s occupants, two adults and two juveniles, were wearing life jackets, officials said.
