The walls will tumble down — intentionally, this time — on the Webber Park Library just off Victory Memorial Drive on the border of Minneapolis and Robbinsdale.
The Hennepin County Board last week discussed a demolition permit for the structure that has been closed since July after the roof started to crumble.
Board Chairman Mike Opat has been trying for a couple of years to find a suitable spot for a new library in that neighborhood. A dispute with one property owner stalled an attempt to move the library across the street. So the new library building is on hold.
At a board meeting last week, a couple of neighborhood residents said they didn't want the county to demolish the shuttered library building at 4310 Webber Parkway.
The board didn't take a vote. But Opat said the structurally dangerous building must come down.
He told the activists that what the library needs most is support for a new location, not protests. A formal demolition vote is likely this month.
