Demi Moore calls drowning at her home an 'unthinkable tragedy'

The Los Angeles Police Department launched an investigation Sunday after a young man was found unresponsive in a swimming pool at the Benedict Canyon home of actress Demi Moore.

Officers responded to a water rescue at a house owned by Moore, in the 9700 block of Oak Pass Road around 5 a.m., the LAPD told local television station CBS 2.

Rescue crews arrived to find one person who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 21-year-old victim died while attending a party hosted by Moore's assistant

Demi Moore says the drowning that occurred at her Los Angeles home on Sunday while she was out of town is an "unthinkable tragedy."

"I am in absolute shock. I was out of the country traveling to meet my daughters for a birthday celebration when I got the devastating news," Moore said in a statement issued to TheWrap.

"The loss of a child is an unthinkable tragedy and my heart goes out to this young man's family and friends. I ask that you please respect the privacy of all concerned during this sensitive time."

The victim was pronounced dead after being found unresponsive in a swimming pool in Moore's backyard. He had been attending a party hosted by one of the star's assistants, officer Mike Lopez of the Los Angeles Police Department told TheWrap.

TMZ posted a photo from the scene showing a coroner's van and three squad cars parked outside the home. The website said the victim was a 21-year-old man.

Moore was not home at the time, authorities said, and the unidentified man is not a family member. The victim is believed to be associated with someone who had access to the home.

Reps for Moore and the LAPD did not immediately respond to TheWrap's request for comment.
