Joseph Stephen Kimani Nganga Maruge, a Kenyan who was believed to be the world's oldest student, has died at the age of 89, five years after he entered primary school so that he could learn to read the Bible, his family said Monday. Maruge died Friday in Nairobi of stomach cancer, said his granddaughter, Anne Maruge. Maruge accomplished his biggest goal -- being able to read the Bible -- but he remained shy of completing primary school.

Ruth Ford, a one-time member of Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre who appeared in numerous Broadway plays and in films and television, has died. She was 98. On Broadway, Ford appeared in plays including "No Exit" (1946), "Miss Julie" and "The Stronger" (1956). For a 1959 Broadway production of "Requiem for a Nun" by William Faulkner, Ford co-starred with her husband, Zachary Scott, and also helped the author adapt his 1951 novel for the stage. Her home in Manhattan was a gathering place for artists and writers.
