Paul Hemphill, 73, an Atlanta Journal sportswriter-turned-novelist who brought a sharp ear for dialogue devoted to the blue-collar South of stock-car racing, football, country music, evangelists and wayward souls, died of cancer Saturday in Atlanta. He also wrote blunt columns about race at a time when the topic was incendiary in the South. AP
