Ralph J. Cappy, chief justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court from 2003 until January 2008, died Friday at his Pittsburgh home. He was 65 and recently had undergone surgery for blocked arteries. During Cappy's tenure, Pennsylvania's highest court upheld the legalization of slot machines.

The Rev. Vernon C. King, a nephew of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., died Friday in Greensboro, N.C., where he was pastor of St. James Baptist Church. He was 48. A statement from the family did not give a cause of death.
