Israel Lopez, 89, a Cuban bassist, composer and bandleader known as Cachao, died Saturday in Coral Gables, Fla., of complications from kidney failure. Cachao was one of the most important Cuban musicians, on or off the island. Music historian Ned Sublette said he also was "arguably the most important bassist in 20th-century popular music."
