Gov. Mark Dayton Friday sent a polite but firm letter to Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker asking for the nearly $59 million his state owes Minnesota "in the very near future."
Dayton said that relations between their predessessors went "seriously awry" regarding the tax reciprocity agreement that resulted in Wisconsin owing the money but Minnesota still needs Wisconsin to pay up.
"Regrettably, Wisconsin's failure to fulfill its responsibility for reimbursement compelled my predecessor, Governor Pawlenty, to terminate the agreement, which forces several thousand citizens in both of our states to have to file dual state income tax returns. While I regret this outcome, I concur with Governor Pawlenty's decision, as the State of Wisconsin at that time owed the State of Minnesota over $58 million," Dayton said in his letter.
The final payment was due on Dec. 1 -- but the Wisconsin Revenue Secretary told the Minnesota Revenue Commissioner that they would not pay until sometime after July 1.
