Day 2 at Augusta National

Matthew Fitzpatrick: Earned the weekend by orchestrating a spectacular back nine. The young Englishman and Northwestern product carded three birdies and an eagle in his final seven holes to shoot 5-under 67, an 11-shot improvement from Day 1.

Justin Rose: The world's No. 1-ranked player looked to put an opening-round 75 behind him by exiting Amen Corner with an eagle at 13. But disaster struck coming in, with three bogeys on the final four holes to cap off a 73 and an early ticket home.

Kiradech Aphibarnrat: The bigger they are, the harder they fall. In the case of Aphibarnrat on Friday he made a big shot and fell harder. The rotund rising star from Thailand found trouble off the tee at No. 17. Needing to play a hook to get around trees, Aphibarnrat took a looping, twisting hack and in the process spun himself backward into the wet Augusta turf. The ball showed better form than his tumble, rolling to about 20 feet from the cup. Aphibarnrat received a warm ovation from the patrons when he dusted himself off, then two-putted for par.

Zach Johnson: We've all done it. But at the most prestigious event in golf? Not so much. One can excuse Johnson's stunned reaction when, while he was taking a practice swing on the 13th tee, the tip of his club hit the ball, sending it into the tee marker. What to do? Playing partners Matt Kuchar and Ian Poulter assured Johnson of Rule 6.2b(5). It states "[i]f a teed ball falls off the tee or is knocked off the tee by the player before the player has made a stroke at it, it may be re-teed ... without penalty." Johnson made birdie but did not escape ridicule. "Y'all can laugh," he was heard saying. "That's embarrassing."

• Jon Rahm, two off the lead, made 15 consecutive pars after a birdie on No. 3.

• Ian Woosnam, the 1991 Masters winner, announced after missing the cut for the 11th consecutive time he is done playing in the event.

Par-5, 530-yard No. 15: Tiger Woods jarred a 30-foot putt on the day's easiest hole (at more than a half-stroke under par) in fading light to elicit a Tiger Roar of old.
