April 29, 2009 at 11:30AM

Severe weather has rattled parts of the Plains the past several days, andtoday will be no exception. A new round of damaging thunderstorms will ignitethis afternoon from the Texas Panhandle to western Nebraska. The thunderstormswill press eastward through Kansas, Oklahoma and North Texas tonight. Dry airclashing with a steamy air mass will fuel the intense thunderstorms. Anotherkey ingredient will be cooler air flowing down from the northern Rockies. The strongest thunderstorms will be capable of producing damaging winds, pounding hail and blinding downpours. A few tornadoes could touch down andcause destruction.

Today is also starting with locally severe weather over Oklahoma and NorthTexas. This cluster of thunderstorms will push into the mid-Mississippi Valleytonight. The main threat with these thunderstorms, however, will be floodingrain.
