Theft. A man came into Bethesda Care Center, 724 19th Av. N., and asked to use the phone. After making a phone call, he identified himself as a South St. Paul assistant hockey coach and gave the receptionist what he said was his name. He told the receptionist that he needed to come up with $50 or his car would be towed. He asked if he could borrow the money, promising to come back later to pay it back and give the receptionist a couple of hockey tickets. The receptionist gave him the $50 but he did not come back. She called the school but was told there was no assistant hockey coach by the name the man had given.
Assault. Police arrested a 35-year-old man in the 100 block of 10th Avenue N. after he allegedly punched his live-in girlfriend and repeatedly shoved her. They had gotten into an argument because she was cooking some noodles for a sick friend, police said.
Theft. Car stereos were stolen from two vehicles in the 300 block of 14th Avenue S.
Vehicle tampering. The Kmart at 50 Signal Hills Drive reported that a man was in the parking lot checking the door handles of several vehicles. An officer picked up the suspect and found that he had pending theft charges out of Hennepin County. He also may be charged with vehicle tampering, police said.
