PRAGUE — The Czech government has agreed to treat some ill or injured children of Syrian refugees and offer their families asylum.
Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka says 15 families and a total of some 70 Syrian refugees now in camps in Jordan will be part of the program as a gesture of solidarity.
Interior Minister Milan Chovanec says authorities are planning a check to insure that the refugees do not pose a security threat for the country.
The government said Wednesday the move has been requested by the U.N. and the European Union. Czech officials previously said the country is not capable of accepting thousands of Syrian refugees as some other EU countries do because of security and economic reasons.
