A veteran mountain bike racer was critically injured when a pickup truck driver with faulty brakes failed to yield on a Bloomington street and struck the man as he rode to work at a bicycle products company.

Jeffrey Hall, 49, of Farmington, was hit shortly before 4 a.m. Tuesday on westbound Old Shakopee Road at Normandale Boulevard, police said.

Emergency medical responders took Hall to HCMC with “significant injuries,” said Deputy Police Chief Kimberly Clauson. An HCMC spokeswoman said Vick was in satisfactory condition Tuesday.

Clauson said pickup driver William E. Vick Jr., 49, of Columbia Heights, was turning right before dawn from southbound Normandale onto Old Shakopee and hit Hall, whose bicycle had all the required safety lights and reflectors.

Officers arrived at the scene and cited Vick for failing to yield and “operating a vehicle with brakes not in working order,” the deputy chief said. The Minnesota Star Tribune reached out to Vick for comment on Monday about the crash, and he declined to respond.

Court records show that Vick’s driving history includes five convictions for driving after his license was revoked, three for driving without proof of insurance and one each for driving an unregistered vehicle, having expired tabs, disobeying a stop sign and speeding. The state Department of Public Safety said Monday that Vick’s license was valid at the time of the crash.

Hall has been a mountain bike racer for many years and competed in the Mountain Bike Series.

Melissa Hall posted in an online fundraising campaign on behalf of the family that her husband was riding to his job at Quality Bicycle Products when the pickup hit him about 1½ miles shy of his workplace of 27 years.

“He sustained a multitude of injuries and broken bones” that put him in the intensive care unit, the posting read. “We know he has the determination and strength to get back out there, but he is going to have a long road of recovery in front of him.”
