Cutler and the QB balance of power

April 4, 2009 at 5:06AM

On our Access Vikings blog, beat writer Judd Zulgad breaks down the trade of Jay Cutler to Chicago as it pertains to the quarterback play in the rest of the NFC North:

It doesn't take an expert to realize the Vikings very well could have the most question marks at QB entering the 2009 season. (In fairness, we have to wait to see what transpires in Detroit before putting the Lions firmly ahead of the Vikings.)

One also must consider that the Vikings defense will now have to face Cutler twice a season. Would you rather go against Rex Grossman, Kyle Orton or Jay Cutler? Cutler has faced the Vikings once in his career, completing 26 of 37 passes for 246 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Broncos' 22-19 overtime victory in 2007 in Denver. Cutler is sure to be overjoyed by this move. He grew up a Bears fan in Indiana, and Chicago was one of his first choices for a landing spot once he requested a trade. The Bears have been mostly quiet this offseason, but this move is sure to be a major public relations boost for a franchise that often has been considered to operate on the cheap.

GOPHERS FOOTBALL

Scrimmage today Gophers football writer Kent Youngblood had updates on his Gridiron Gold blog leading up to today's scrimmage:

Coach Tim Brewster said the defense is still well ahead of the offense. Not surprising, really. While Kevin Cosgrove has kept much of the defensive scheme used last season, Jedd Fisch is implementing a new offense, and that will take some time to learn.

"We're making explosive plays for sure, but there are inconsistencies," Brewster said of his offense. "But I like what we're doing running the football."

One thing I've noticed is fullback Jon Hoese, who has added 15 pounds from last season. He is moving very well, and Brewster said he's doing well as a lead blocker.
