Evening update: Cuddyer, Kubel decline arbitration

Twins hope to sign one of them and will remain in contact with their agents.

As expected, both Michael Cuddyer and Jason Kubel rejected the Twins arbitration offers.

The Twins will continue to try to re-sign Cuddyer - who has a three-year, $24 million offer on the table. If they don't sign Cuddyer, they could turn to Kubel. Twins GM Terry Ryan will remain in contact with Cuddyer's agent, but the Twins could move on to other free agents if they don't get an answer from Cuddyer soon,

At least the Twins will receive compensation if either Cuddyer or Kubel - or both of them - sign with another club. If Cuddyer signs elsewhere, the Twins will receive a first round pick in the spot right before the team that signs him and a pick between the first and second rounds.

If/when Kubel signs elsewhere, the Twins will get a pick between the first and second rounds because he is a Type B free agent.

The winter meetings wrap up on Thursday with the Rule 5 draft at 9 a.m. The Twins have the second overall pick and are expected to select a pitcher.
