A man who led police on a high-speed chase Sunday evening in Crookston died after the vehicle crashed into a concrete bridge pillar and caught fire.

Crookston police were sent to do a welfare check on 27-year-old Dominic Herkenhoff around 6 p.m. When the officers showed up, he quickly fled in a pickup truck, but not before hitting a squad car with the vehicle.

The man sped into town on eastbound Hwy. 2. He ran off the road and into a bridge pillar at the intersection of Main St. North, where his truck burst in flames.

A state patrol report shows Herkenhoff was a Crookston resident.

The Minnesota State Patrol, Crookston Police Department and Polk County Sheriff's Office are investigating the incident.
