Freshman Minnesota Republican Chip Cravaack joined U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann Thursday in voting against the $38 billion budget-cut deal that would fund the government for the next six months. Cravaack, like Bachmann, argued that the cuts didn't go deep enough. Minnesota Democrat Keith Ellison also voted against the deal, coming at it from the opposite view that the cuts go too deep. Altogether, 59 Republicans voted against the deal, as did 108 Democrats, including Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Many of the Republican no votes came from the GOP 2010 freshman class. Many of the Democratic no votes came from liberals in fairly safe districts. Nevertheless, the deal cut between Republican and Democratic leaders was ratified by the House by a vote was 260-167. Cravaack's vote was the biggest surprise of the Minnesota delegation, because he had voted for the midnight Friday agreement that averted an immediate government shutdown. In the end, though, Cravaack said he was not willing to go along with the underlying 2011 budget compromise. "When I was elected last November, I told the people of the Eighth District I was serious about addressing our exploding deficits and beginning the process of reining in our massive $14 trillion national debt," Cravaack said. "I do not believe this legislation made sufficient cuts, therefore I was unable to support it." Let the 2012 budget debate begin.
