A car hit a tree early Monday in Brooklyn Center, killing one person and injuring another, authorities said. This death brings to eight the number of fatalities on Minnesota roads since the weekend.

The latest fatal crash occurred about 1 a.m. on southbound Shingle Creek Parkway, just west of the Earle Brown Heritage Center, police said.

The woman who was killed has yet to be identified and appears to have been the driver, police said. The name of the person injured, also a woman, also has yet to be released. They are both from Minneapolis.

Police said neither woman was wearing a seat belt. There is no word yet on whether alcohol played a role in the crash.

Among the eight fatalities since the weekend is a crash on Interstate 94 in Minneapolis that left three people dead.
