Cow Calls in Dalarna

Fri.-Sat.: Poet Bart Sutter uses cow calls and cow horns, folk songs and fiddle music, hymns and poetry in this idyll to a bygone era in the forests of Sweden. The show celebrates the women who herded cows in the Swedish woodlands and made cheese and whey to sustain families through the winter. The calls today sound quaint, but they served practical purposes to keep the women herders in touch with their cattle, and with one another. Sutter plays the sole male role in an ensemble with actors Mary Jo Uhlenkott, Rose Arrowsmith DeCoux, Heidi Lyle and Patricia Dorn. Each plays a woman with a unique cow call. All are supported musically by fiddler Frances Olson. (6:30 p.m. Fri., 2:30 p.m. Sat., The American Swedish Institute, 2600 Park Av. S., Mpls. $15-$20. 612-871-4907 or ASImn.org.)
