Counterfeit BlackBerry batteries recalled

The batteries could overheat and cause burns.

From my colleague Jane Friedmann:

If you have a refurbished BlackBerry, your battery may be part of a recall announced last week by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. About 470,000 refurbished BlackBerry phones distributed by Asurion may contain counterfeit BlackBerry-branded batteries.

Asurion, an insurer of electronics, received two reports of the batteries overheating and causing minor burns.
The affected units were distributed between March 2004 and October 2009 through the insurance claim process.
The commission says customers should stop using the phones and contact the company to see if their batteries are under recall. Call 1-866-384-9175 or go to www.001batex.com, where images of the affected batteries are posted.
