A Hammond, Wis., teenager was critically injured and three other young people were less seriously hurt after a crash in Cottage Grove on Wednesday evening, police said Thursday.

The crash was reported at 6:15 p.m. at the intersection of 70th Street and Joliet Avenue, said Police Capt. Pete Koerner.

Justin Kattre, 17, was first taken to Regions Hospital Wednesday night, but was at Gillette Children's Hospital on Thursday, according to the hospitals.

His family has asked that the hospital not publicly release Kattre's condition at this time. But at St. Croix Central High School in Hammond, word was spreading that Kattre was improving on Thursday, an employee said.

He was a passenger in a car drive by a 17-year-old Cottage Grove girl, whose name was not released. They were heading west on 70th Street when she turned left, to go onto Joliet Street, but her car was struck by an eastbound sports utility vehicle driven by Kimberly Lemons, 44, of Cottage Grove, Koerner said.

Lemons was not injured but her son, Bradley Lemons, 12, and his friend, Nathan Van Kleek, 13, were treated and released at Woodwinds Hospital in Woodbury and at Regions, Koerner said.

"Three students in the district -- two from Cottage Grove Middle and one from Park High School -- were part of the accident in Cottage Grove on Jan. 11," said Barbara Brown, spokeswoman for South Washington County Schools.

"All had injuries, but are doing well at this time," she said.

At St. Croix Central High School, Kattre has excelled in athletics, including as a player for the Panthers football team.

Koerner said the investigation continues.
