Have you ever been out driving or walking while it's raining and noticed an automatic sprinkler dousing someone's lawn? I have, and wondered why we're wasting such a precious resource.
Well, it turns out that's not necessary any longer, if it ever was. As Jessica Schaum points out, in some communities and states people are required to install sprinkler systems with automatic sensing devices to keep them from operating during the rain. The technology is available and it works.
Jessica has some other simple ideas on how to conserve water, something that's going to increase in importance. Some are even saying that water is the oil of the 21st century — and will become significantly more valuable to all of us.
The U.S. EPA's Water Sense program also has useful water conservation information.
