Connecticut Dam Fails; Other Northeast Flood, Severe Storm Concerns

While flash flooding and severe thunderstorms will threaten parts of theNortheast today, a dam failure has already put nearby land underwater inextreme southeastern Connecticut. The Sylvia's Pond Dam near Stonington failedlate Wednesday evening. The Stonington area was one of the many places ineastern New York and southern New England where thunderstorms unleasheddrenching rain earlier Wednesday. Over 4.50 inches of rain inundated theairport at nearby New London, Conn.Periods of rain and thunderstorms will persist over Stonington today. Thesteadiest rain will pour down this morning, threatening to worsen the floodingunderway near the dam.

Rain and thunderstorm will also overspread New England and eastern New Yorktoday. There is a serious concern for more dangerous flash flooding where heavyrain poured down on Wednesday.

Showers and thunderstorms will rumble across the rest of the Northeasttoday. The clash of a pocket of cool air with more seasonable warmth over themid-Atlantic will trigger severe thunderstorms this afternoon from New YorkCity to Baltimore. Damaging winds and hail are the main threats. Anythunderstorm, however, throughout the Northeast will produce dangerouslightning.
