Minneapolis' sole cable franchise holder is looking to transfer its franchise to a new cable provider.

Monday, the City Council's Ways and Means Committee will discuss a request from Comcast to spin off its franchise rights to GreatLand Connections. The company is making similar requests in other cities as a result of its merger with Time Warner Cable.

Comcast's franchise agreement with Minneapolis is set through 2021. According to a report prepared for the council, city officials have proposed a transfer agreement that would require GreatLand Communications to continue to offer public access channels and announcements.

The request comes as Comcast is facing a challenge from CenturyLink, which this month submitted paperwork indicating its intention to seek a cable franchise from the city for its Prism TV service. Comcast's franchise is not exclusive.
