Snowy and icy conditions may have played a role in a rear-end crash Monday that killed a 58-year man on I-94 near St. Cloud, the State Patrol said.

A semitrailer truck carrying a large excavator had stopped on eastbound I-94 just west of County Road 75 in Benton County due to crashes ahead. A Dodge Caravan then rear-ended the semitrailer truck about 5:30 p.m., the State Patrol said.

The driver of the Caravan, identified by the patrol as Frederick Paul Meyer, of Clearwater, Minn., died at the scene. He was wearing a seat belt.

The condition of the truck driver, Kelvin Glenn Bartlett, of New Florence, Mo., was not immediately known.

The crash was one of 412 that the patrol responded to between 10 a.m. and 8:45 p.m. Monday. That is on top of 230 vehicles that slid off the road or spun out, the patrol said.
