Cleanup Saturday for Seminary Fen in Chanhassen

October 28, 2012 at 3:17AM

Volunteers will have the opportunity to clean up one of the state's natural treasures next Saturday in Chanhassen.

The city and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will host a cleanup at the Seminary Fen, an unusual type of wetland that supports rare plants.

On Nov. 3, from 9 a.m. to noon, volunteers will remove buckthorn and collect trash at the site.

DNR workers will start the event by introducing the fen's natural features and history, including why it is protected as one of the state's scientific and natural areas.

The fen got its name from an old seminary that was once located at the site.

It is located on the north side of Flying Cloud Drive (County Road 61), approximately a half-mile west of Bluff Creek Drive.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring work gloves, comfortable clothes and pruners. All ages are welcome, but the site is undeveloped and good mobility is needed. Refreshments will be provided.
