The Minneapolis Charter Commission will debate at its June 2 meeting whether to recommend a voter referendum on two potential charter changes involving redistricting.
One of the changes would have the effect of guaranteeing a redistricting commission seat to any minor political party that elects someone to city office. The other change would have the Charter Commission pick from among competing redistricting plans if the redistricting commission deadlocks on picking one. Currently, deadlocks are broken by drawing lots.
The commission decided Wednesday to schedule meetings later this month at which the public may comment on the proposals, which were drafted by a redistricting task force of the commission. Redistricting of ward boundaries must be completed in 2012 after new census figures are available.
