Chorus, orchestra perform for a cause

The Woodbury Chorus & Orchestra comes home to King of Kings Lutheran Church to perform in concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 7.

The community is invited to attend. There is no charge for this concert. Donations will be accepted for the Woodbury Christian Cupboard.

This arts organization is unique in the Twin Cities. Each member is a volunteer, including the directors, and each is dedicated to helping those in need. Their primary mission is to contribute to food shelves in the areas where they perform, through proceeds of freewill offerings taken at their concerts.

Members also enjoy sharing great music with their audiences, and most of them have had extensive experience in school, community and church musical groups.

Tickets are on sale for the Lakeshore Players Theatre production of "Seussical the Musical," running Fridays through Sundays from April 18 to May 19 at the theater at 4820 Stewart Av. in White Bear Lake.

In this romp through Dr. Seuss' much loved stories, the Cat in the Hat tells the tale of Horton the elephant, who hears a cry for help coming from a small speck of dust and promises to rescue it because "a person's a person, no matter how small." Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community triumph.

Shakespeare & Company, Minnesota's longest-running outdoor classical repertory theater, will hold auditions for its 38th season from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, at the Theatre Building, Century College West Campus, 3300 Century Av. N. in White Bear Lake.

The company will be casting a non-Equity central company of 20 to 25 actors. No Equity contracts or paid positions will be available this season. All roles are available.

Shakespeare & Company encourages all actors to audition, regardless of age, ethnicity or experience level. Please bring three copies of a current acting résumé and a headshot, and prepare two contrasting classical monologues, at least one from the works of Shakespeare. No appointment is necessary.

Rehearsals will begin the second week of May. Shakespeare & Company's season begins on June 29 and runs weekends through Aug. 4.

Performing in repertory, the company will present Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew," "Macbeth" and George Farquhar's "The Beaux' Stratagem."

Risa Cohen will be discussing Ernest Hemingway's "A Moveable Feast," a memoir of Hemingway's years in Paris in the 1920s, at 7 p.m.

The discussion will be followed with a dinner based on a menu by Lynne Rosetto Kasper, food writer and Minnesota Public Radio host of "The Splendid Table." Part of the proceeds from this event will be donated to MPR.

The St. Croix Sailing Club begins its 39th season on May 21 and is now accepting applications for the 2013 season. No experience in sailing is required, and lessons are available.

The St Croix Sailing Club has been promoting sailing on the river since 1974. The mission of the club is to promote the sport and recreation of family sailing on the St. Croix and to provide a means for those persons interested in sailing to further their skills and enjoyment.

Tickets are on sale for the St. Croix Ballet's presentation of "Sleeping Beauty" April 26-28 at Stillwater Area High School, 5701 Stillwater Blvd. N. in Oak Park Heights.

"Sleeping Beauty," one of the world's most enduring and beloved fairy tales, tells the story of Princess Aurora, who has an evil spell cast on her by the angry and wicked fairy, Carabosse. The Lilac Fairy, the fairy of wisdom, triumphs over the evil fairy leaving Aurora to sleep for 100 years only to be awoken by the kiss of the brave prince.

The Stillwater version of Sleeping Beauty is being directed by Susan Hovey.

Photographs by troubled teens from the "In a New Light" program at Northwest Passage, a residential mental health treatment center in Frederic, Wis., will be shown in St. Croix Falls, Wis., on Saturday.

In addition to the presentation, the "National Parks In a New Light" exhibit will be on display in the visitor center. The exhibit opens April 12 and runs through June 28.
