Do you as an average Joe Viking fan ever wonder if you could coach this team better than Childress could? I do. I probably couldn't, but I have a small amount of common sense. And that appears to be more than Brad has got.
In the interests of full disclosure - I'm not a huge Childress fan, but I recognize that he has improved this team since taking it apart his first year here. But I think we can all agree at this point, Mike Tice is a more accomplished head coach than Brad. Well, maybe not, but Tice (a personal favorite) does have a playoff victory under his belt (and in Green Bay no less!).
But back to the question - if as a head coach of an NFL football team, who is the most important person to have a relationship with? 1. The owner. (And it is clear that Brad has got the art of ring kissing and shoe shining down to an art, given the hurry the Wilfs were in to sign him to an extension). But isn't #2 the QB of your team? I mean, as an average rube, even I understand how important it is to be in lockstep with the leader of your offense (and in most cases, team).
Looking at Childress' history of relationships with his QBs:
-Daunte Culpepper - this soap opera was played out all over the front pages. Brad probably was right in this case, given Daunte's subsequent play - but wasn't he as good as what came after?
-Brad Johnson - it is clear that Brad couldn't stand the other Brad from the get go. And vice versa.
-The succession of unathletic, white, never was QBs who followed Brad - Kelly Holcomb, Brooks Bollinger and Gus might as well have been related for all they had in common. It appears that Brad generally prefers this type of QB who will follow his unimaginative playcalling to the T without the political muscle to audible or complain about it publicly. Might as well throw Darrell Bevell into this catergory given his similiarity to the other 3.
-T-Jack - as there ever been a more mismanaged QB succession attempt. (I mean other than Jason Campbell.) You are the back-up, no the starter, no you are a career back-up, no you're my starter, well you'll have to compete with another of my whitebread specials (Sage), no you're the starter, wait Brett's here - grab some pine.
