A boy struck and killed by a car in Minneapolis on Friday night was 3 years old, police said Saturday.

Late Saturday, he was identified as Hamza Mohoumed Abdillaki, who lives on the block where he was struck. The Minneapolis police traffic investigation unit is handling the inquiry.

According to a news release, the boy got out of a van parked facing north on the 2500 block of 17th Avenue S. about 8:30 p.m. Friday. He walked behind the van and onto the street.

A Chrysler sedan traveling north on 17th Avenue S. struck the child. Passersby tried to help until emergency crews arrived. The driver is cooperating with investigators, police said.

The boy was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he died of multiple blunt force injuries, the medical examiner's office said.
