Headed to "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" ("raucous and masterful," decreed Star Tribune critic Rohan Preston) at the Guthrie Theater? Make it a two-fer with a meal before or after the show.

Aromatic curries, hearty noodle dishes and artfully composed salads are just a few of the reasons to book a lunch or dinner table at stylish, affordable Kindee Thai Restaurant. Co-owner Nuntanit Charoensit, a Bangkok native, cooks up a storm, starting with her exceptional shrimp- and mint-packed spring rolls and spicy beef lettuce wraps.

At his cozy -- and accurately named -- restaurant, Sanctuary owner Michael Kutscheid definitely ranks as one of the Twin Cities' more hospitable hosts. Chef Patrick Atanalian also makes each visit a special event, particularly Monday through Thursday evenings, when he offers a spontaneous five-course tasting menu for just $35. Dine from Feb. 28 to March 4 and take advantage of a three-course $30 dinner, part of Mpls.St.Paul magazine's annual Restaurant Week promotion (www.mspmag.com).

Sea Change, the Guthrie's dramatic marquee restaurant, covers all kinds of pre- and post-curtain bases, including chef Erik Anderson's beautifully rendered raw bar dishes, pork steamed buns that deserve a standing ovation, imaginative seafood entrees (don't miss the stunner of a bouillabaisse) and a small selection of "not fish" dishes, starting with a superb roast chicken (dinner entrees in the $20s). Matinee? The restaurant serves a knockout lunch.
