Road maps

Since moving to the Metrodome in 1982, the Twins have had two eras of success: 1987 through 1992 (two World Series, three 90-plus win seasons) and 2002 through 2010 (six division titles, five 90-win seasons). But each of those eras required a lengthy rebuilding process. A look back at the years preceding the success:

1982-1986: The Twins made a decision in 1982 to go with a youth movement, and six rookies from the 1982 team that lost 102 games — Kent Hrbek, Gary Gaetti, Tom Brunansky, Randy Bush, Tim Laudner and Frank Viola — were key contributors to the 1987 World Series championship team. The 1982 team also included Opening Day rookie starter Jim Eisenreich.

1993-2001: The Twins started a streak of eight consecutive losing seasons in 1993, concluding with four seasons of 90-plus losses in a row before an 85-77 record in 2001. The turnaround came largely with the maturation of players such as Torii Hunter, Jacque Jones and Corey Koskie, plus minor league promotions for Doug Mientkiewicz and A.J. Pierzynski, a script the Twins hope to follow in the near future.
