Slotting system
Baseball's slotting system, which went into effect last year, makes recommendations on what each draftee can be signed for, and imposes penalties — in luxury taxes or future draft picks — on teams whose total spending exceeds the aggregate of those amounts. Here are the amounts, for instance, that teams can spend on the top 10 players taken in the draft, which begins Thursday:
1. Astros$7,490,400
2. Cubs$6,708,400
3. Rockies$5,626,400
4. Twins$4,544,400
5. Indians$3,787,000
6. Marlins$3,516,500
7. Red Sox$3,246,000
