A 19-year-old man, a bandanna over his face and handgun raised, strode toward his targets in a Rochester neighborhood and fatally shot one man in the forehead and slightly wounded two others, according to charges filed Thursday.
Courtney E. Ocegueda, of Rochester, was charged in Olmsted County District Court with second-degree murder and several counts of attempted murder in the shooting Monday afternoon. Ocegueda remains jailed in lieu of $500,000 bail.
Ocegueda was arrested early the next morning to the north in Faribault, but not before an hourslong residential standoff that ended when law enforcement used smoke bombs to flush out him and another man.
Fatally shot outside the Parkside Mobile Home Park was Trumane Gillmore, 22, of Rochester. Two other men, 20-year-old Demonterious Jackson, of Rochester, and 18-year-old Jerome Zachary, of Chicago, were shot and wounded in the same incident.
Police said the three victims were playing basketball outside near Marion Road and Park Lane SE. about the time they were shot. Jackson said the shooting started while the men were playing, but Zachary said Gillmore opened fire while the three victims were getting into Jackson's car.
Police Capt. John Sherwin said Ocegueda opened fire because he believed some of the men were responsible for robbing him of cash and possibly illicit narcotics and a watch.
Ocegueda told police that he doesn't recall how many shots he squeezed off but remembers that "[my] adrenaline was pumping," the criminal complaint read.
Police arrived and found Gillmore on his back and a gunshot wound to his forehead, according to the charges. He was declared dead at the scene.
