A 34-year-old man was charged Thursday with firing shots from his car in north Minneapolis into another car on a weekend afternoon, killing one man and wounding another.

Jamal K. Newell, of Brooklyn Center, was arrested Tuesday and charged in Hennepin County District Court with second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder in the Aug. 7 shooting.

Newell remains jailed in lieu of $2 million bail ahead of a court appearance Friday.

Michael D.W. Polk, 32, of Eagan, died from multiple gunshots. The other victim's name has yet to be released.

Polk died two days later at North Memorial Medical Center, while the other victim survived his wounds.

The day after the shooting, a witness and some children were playing a game in a North Side yard, where one of the youngsters found a handgun in a black sock inside a window well behind a house. The witness told police that he overheard Newell admitting to the shooting.

When questioned by police, Newell said he and Polk were members of rival gangs, but he denied being the shooter.

Newell's criminal history includes convictions for assault, robbery and illegal possession of a firearm.
