Charges: Dispute over marijuana leads to Lake St. stabbing death

A Minneapolis man faces murder charges for allegedly stabbing another man at the Lake Street light rail station Tuesday.

Frank Runningshield, Jr., 43, was charged in Hennepin County District Court with second-degree murder in the death of 26-year-old Daquan Thompson. Runningshield is expected to make his first appearance Monday.

Charges say that at about 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Runningshield and Thompson and two other people were talking near the entrance to the Blue Line station at 2310 Lake St. E. One witness told investigators that the two men were in a dispute over the sale of marijuana.

The video from a surveillance camera showed the conversation ending, apparently on good terms, when Runningshield made a quick stabbing motion toward Thompson, who immediately doubled over in pain, the complaint states. Runningshield walked away and appeared to drop something on the ground. Thompson eventually collapsed and died about 45 minutes later at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Police later recovered the knife blade and the handle, separately, near the stabbing scene. Runningshield was arrested Wednesday and he told police that he and Thompson had been arguing for about three weeks because Thompson was "messing with" Runningshield's friends and family, according to the complaint.
