A south Minneapolis man assaulted and seriously injured his 82-year-old mother in her Bloomington home, according to prosecutors.

James Bulygo, 56, was charged in Hennepin County with second-degree attempted murder and remains jailed in lieu of $500,000 bail ahead of a District Court appearance Friday.

Lila Bulygo was taken from her home in the 2600 block of W. 90th Street to Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina following the attack Wednesday morning and was in critical condition.

The son told police at the scene that he and has mother had been arguing, and he offered no motive for his actions other than to say he's mentally ill, the criminal complaint read.

According to the complaint:

The mother called 911 to say she needed help. Responding police officers were let in by James Bulygo, his shirt bloodied.

The officers located Lila Bulygo on a couch. She lacked a pulse and was not breathing. A dish towel was wrapped several times tightly around her neck.

Paramedics and officers restored her pulse and transported her to the hospital, where she remained unconscious with an irregular heartbeat.

Once under arrest, James Bulygo told police that he argued with his mother, "got angry," hit her with a tape measure and tried to kill her with the towel.
