Chad Erickson, Brad Gibson to be inducted into Minnesota Hall of Fame in wrestling

Two former Gophers wrestlers, Chad Erikson and Brad Gibson, will be inducted into the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame on May 4, 2019.

Erikson, a two-time All-American with 105 career wins, was part of the 2001 and 2002 NCAA championship teams. He is sixth all-time on the Gophers list with 40 career pins. He previously coached at Apple Valley High School, and now works at Minnesota Elite, which conducts wrestling camps.

Gibson, a Chokio, Minn., native, was a two-time All-American in 1993 and 1994 and finished his career with 78 victories. He was the 1994 Big Ten champion at 177 pounds. After his career ended, Gibson spent some time coaching both the Gophers and local high school wrestling programs.

Junior righthander Amber Fiser pitched a five-hitter and Natalie DenHartog and MaKenna Partain hit homers as the No. 21 Gophers softball team beat Wichita State 5-0 on Saturday afternoon in the South Florida Invitational at the tournament's second site in Clearwater, Fla.

Minnesota, which has scored first in 21 of 25 games, took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Hope Brandner's sacrifice fly and a wild pitch. Natalie DenHartog, a freshman left fielder, went deep for her eighth homer of the season in the sixth inning. Partain hit a two-run shot in the seventh.

The Gophers (18-7) have won five games in a row and are 13-2 in their past 15 games.

Minnesota played Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday night.

The Dragons (27-6) played host Fort Hays on Saturday night in the second round.

Senior guard Jacky Volkert led MSU Moorhead with 16 points and nine rebounds in their second NCAA tournament win ever — their first came 10 years ago over Nebraska-Kearney 67-54. Junior forward Madi Green had 14 points and three rebounds. Junior forward Megan Hintz had a career-high six assists and a team-best 15 rebounds.

The Dragons shot 34.5 percent (19-of-55) from the field compared to 28.8 percent (23-of-80) for UMD (23-7). The Dragons outrebounded the Bulldogs 57-39.

Four Gophers women won titles in the Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla. Rachel Schow took first in the 400-meter hurdles (59.14), Hannah Morris won the long jump (19-2¾), Temi Ogunrinde captured the hammer throw (201-8) and Tess Keyzers took the shot put (51-1¾).

On the men's side, Sammie Houston won the triple jump (49-7¼), Elliott Davis topped the 400 (47.29) and Lucas Trapp won the 800 (1:51.89). On Friday, Jon Nerdal won the hammer throw (207-11).
