An employee of The Catholic Spirit, the official publication of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, traveled to Egypt recently to visit family but has ended up becoming an unwitting witness to the ongoing protests there.
He and his wife are also among the thousands of foreigners now trying to flee the country.
John Wolszon, production supervisor at the newspaper in St. Paul, and his wife Mary Jo left their home in Stillwater on Jan. 20 to visit their daughter, son-in-law and three grandchildren, who reside in Egypt.
The couple's other daughter in Stillwater, Michelle Nelson, told The Catholic Spirit she and her brother Brad Wolszon, "spent a tough weekend waiting to hear from them."
With most Internet and cell phone service down in Egypt, Nelson said she hasn't talked with her parents since Jan. 27, when Egyptians began protesting the leadership of President Hosni Mubarak.
Although the Wolszons were to be in Egypt until Feb. 16, Nelson is hoping they and the rest of the family members in Egypt will return to Minnesota sooner.
