Junior Matt Wilkinson of Carleton won the 5,000-meter run (13:55.27) in the NCAA Division III track and field meet in Greensboro, N.C., one day after taking first in the 3,000 steeplechase.

Wilkinson, a Minnetonka High School graduate, was the top seed in both.

Joel Smith of Bethel was second in the 400 hurdles (52.82).

Ryan Miller of St. John's was third in the 100 (10.58).

Megan Gehrke of St. Thomas placed second in the shot put (49 feet, 10 inches). Birgen Nelson of Gustavus was second in the 100 hurdles (13:98). Jessica Bliese of Minnesota Morris was second in the hammer throw (53.19 meters).

Mavs relay so close

Minnesota State Mankato finished second in the women's 4x100 relay (44.87) — one hundredth of a second behind Grand Valley State on its track — in the NCAA Division II track and field meet in Allendale, Mich. Denisha Cartwright anchored that relay and also took third in the 100 hurdles (13.58).

Senior Benjamin Allen of Concordia (St. Paul) was the runner-up in the 1,500 (3:52.96).

U runners 3rd, 8th

Senior Abby Kohut-Jackson of the Gophers placed third in the 3,000 steeplechase (9:46.96) in the West Preliminary track and field meet in College Station, Texas. She was second in her heat and broke her own program record. The top 12 advance to the NCAA Championships from June 9-12 in Eugene, Ore.

Junior Alec Basten of Minnesota placed eighth in the men's 3,000 steeplechase (8:40.14). Both of them were Big Ten champions in the steeplechase earlier this month.

Senior Bethany Hasz finished eight in the 5,000 (16:00.44). Freshman Shelby Frank placed 12th in the women's discus (172-2) to also advance.

Augustana ousted

Top-ranked and top-seeded Augustana, after winning one elimination game, lost its second one to West Texas A&M 9-4 in the NCAA Division II softball tournament in Denver. The Buffaloes scored four runs in sixth to take a 9-3 lead. The Vikings (49-8) had won the national title in 2019.

Earlier Augustana routed Grand Valley State 13-2. Torri Chute had four hits, including a homer and double, and six RBI for the Vikings.

St. Thomas softball out

The St. Thomas softball team won one game in the losers' bracket but lost a second in the NCAA Division III softball tournament in Salem, Va., and was eliminated.

The Tommies (33-10) lost to top-seeded DePauw of Greencastle, Ind., 3-2 when the Tigers (40-3) hit a two-run homer in the seventh. Coryn Jacobson drove in both runs for St. Thomas on a double in the third and a triple in the fifth.

Earlier, Megan Beniecke's solo homer in the bottom of the sixth inning gave St. Thomas a 2-1 victory over Rochester (N.Y.). The game was resumed at 8 a.m. Saturday in the bottom of the fourth inning with the score tied 1-1 from the day before when rain halted play. Kierstin Anderson-Glass pitched a five-hitter for the Tommies (33-9), striking out 11 and walking none.

Mavs fall in ninth

Minnesota State Mankato lost 2-1 to Southern Arkansas in the NCAA Division II Central Regional in baseball in Warrensburg, Mo., when the Muleriders scored on unearned run in the bottom of the ninth. Nick Altermatt pitched a three-hitter for the Mavericks and struck out eight while Ross Indlecoffer hit a homer in the second.

Augustana lost 8-7 to Henderson State of Arkadelphia, Ark., in 11 innings in the losers' bracket. The Reddies rallied for three runs in the bottom of the 11th.

J.T. Mix's two-run single in the 11th broke a 5-all tie for the Vikings (36-13). Sam Baier had an RBI double in the fourth inning for Augustana and Carter Howell a homer and Jordan Barth a two-run single in a three-run eighth.

Tommies power

St. Thomas hit three home runs to eliminate York (Pa.) 8-7 in the Collegeville regional of the NCAA Division III baseball tournament at St. John's.

Sam Kulesa hit a solo homer and Jake Porter a two-run shot in the first inning for the Tommies (31-7) and Charlie Eldredge another solo in the fourth.

In the St. Paul regional, Northwestern edged St. Mary's 3-1, scoring all its runs in the eighth on Andrew Simonson's RBI single and Eric Peterson's two-run double. The Eagles are 34-10 after winning the matchup of tournament unbeatens. Bryce Crabb scattered 10 hits for the win.

• The Gophers baseball team lost 7-3 to Penn in West Lafayette, Ind. Its record dropped to 5-30.

• Gophers senior Angus Flanagan of Woking, England, was named to the Division I PING Midwest All-Region golf team for the third straight season.

• Gophers sophomore wrestler Brayton Lee lost on criteria to Arizona State's Jacori Teemer in the 70 kg freestyle semifinals of the UWW U23 National Championships in Lincoln, Neb. Lee, sixth in the past NCAA meet, had won his first four matches and tied his match at 7-all against Teemer, fourth at NCAAs, in the last seconds. Lee then won two more matches to place third.
