A car veered off a road in Wayzata early Sunday and landed upside down in the woods near a bike trail, authorities said.

Police were alerted to the crash about 5:25 a.m. along Shoreline Drive just to the south of the Woodhill Country Club and east of Hillside Drive, said Police Lt. Phil Reiter.

The driver was taken by air ambulance to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale with serious injuries, Reiter said. He said he did not know whether the injuries were life-threatening.

Reiter said it appeared speed contributed to the crash, which left the car on its roof near the Dakota Rail Regional Trail.

The man's name has not been released.
