A bus taking Northfield students on a field trip and a car collided Thursday morning at an intersection in Faribault, Minn., killing the car's driver, authorities said.

No one on the bus was hurt, the school district said. On board were 49 students from Northfield Middle School, three school staff members and one parent chaperone, said district spokeswoman Hannah Puczko.

The car's driver, who died at the scene at Hwy. 60 and Park Avenue, was an 81-year-old woman, police said. Her name has yet to be released.

The bus, a Northfield Lines coach, was on its way to History Day at Minnesota State University, Mankato, when the crash happened shortly before 8:40 a.m., Puczko said.

Everyone on the bus except for two students chose to continue on to Mankato, said Principal Jeff Pesta.

Northfield Lines President John Benjamin, who went to the accident scene, said, "The bus and the driver ... did exactly what they are designed and trained to do, which is to protect the children." Benjamin said the driver would be subject to drug and alcohol testing, which is standard procedure.
