A motorist lost control of his speeding car and rolled it off a city street and onto a freeway ramp in New Brighton on Sunday, leaving the driver dead and a passenger injured, authorities said.

The crash occurred shortly before noon near southbound Interstate 35W at the County Road E2 exit near the New Brighton-Arden Hills border, according to the State Patrol.

The 34-year-old driver was "traveling at a high rate of speed" on eastbound 6th Street NW. when he came to a sharp bend in the road and crashed though the freeway fence, then rolled several times down an embankment, the patrol said. The car came to rest on its roof on the freeway ramp of southbound Interstate 35W serving County Road E2.

Authorities have not released the driver's name. His brother identified him to the Star Tribune as Matthew Albertson of New Brighton. Jason Albertson said his brother was engaged to be married and is survived by two young sons.

The passenger, 34-year-old Eric M. Flahave, was treated at the scene for his injuries.
