Car-free events promote healthy living in Minneapolis

The name says it all: Open Streets Mpls.

The event promotes healthful living, local business, sustainable transportation and plain old fun by closing streets to car traffic so participants can bike, walk, skateboard, inline-skate and even unicycle around the neighborhood.

During the past five years, Open Streets has grown from one neighborhood to eight. The second Open Streets event of the summer, which took place in Northeast, offered more than 3 miles of safe, car-free streets to traverse as well as activities for the whole family. But don't worry, you didn't miss out. There's still plenty of time to experience Open Streets Mpls in other neighborhoods into September. Check out the schedule at www.openstreetsmpls.org — and dust off that unicycle.

Open Streets Northeast spanned a 3.5-mile, mostly flat route for cyclists, inline skaters or walkers.

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
