Commuters riding Northstar trains Thursday morning can expect delays of 10 to 15 minutes, Metro Transit says.

Both passenger and freight trains are operating on a single track in the Elk River area after an early morning crash at the 171st Avenue NW. crossing, said BNSF spokeswoman Amy McBeth.

A motorist struck the 75th car of an empty BNSF coal train around 1 a.m. The collision caused one of the train's cars to derail, McBeth said.

The driver was hurt, but there was no word on how serious the injuries were. No crew members on the BNSF train were hurt, she said.

BNSF crews are on the scene making repairs and working to clear the tracks. "There will be some delay for traffic on that route," McBeth said.
