Caledonia coach Carl Fruechte said he expected his team to match up well against Class 2A newcomer Minneapolis North in the state quarterfinals Friday night.

His intuition proved correct, as the Warriors defeated the Polars 38-0 at Burnsville.

Quarterback Owen King threw three touchdown passes and rushed for another, as the two-time defending state champion Warriors (11-0) won their 39th consecutive game.

"We have a lot of faith in our system," Fruechte said. "We think we're fast, too."

North (10-1) appeared to have little trouble this year in its move to 2A. The Polars, last year's Class 1A champions, averaged 47 points a game while giving up only 12.1.

They appeared out of sync against a strong Caledonia defense, however. The Polars fumbled on their first offensive play and yielded six sacks in the game.

King completed 14 of 24 passes for 179 yards, despite cold and windy conditions. All three of his touchdown passes went to senior wide receiver Jordan Burg.

"He just did his thing tonight," King said of Burg. "I'll take him on anybody one on one."

North had won 23 consecutive games before losing this one. Polars coach Charlie Adams said quarterback Armon Dalton, running back Kehyan Porter and wide receiver Nasir El-Amin all suffered injuries around halftime.
