Twins rookie center fielder Byron Buxton was placed on the disabled list this morning with a sprained left thumb. He suffered the injury while trying to steal second base against the White Sox on Tuesday.

Danny Santana has been called up from Class AAA Rochester to replace him.

Buxton played Wednesday against the White Sox and struck out in all four of his at-bats.

Santana started the season with the Twins, but struggled both on defense and at bat. After being sent to the minors on June 7, he batted .308 in 15 games for Rochester.

In 49 games for the Twins, Santana batted .219 and made 12 errors.

In 11 games with the Twins, Buxton was batting .189, with seven hits and 15 strikeouts in 37 at-bats. Last season, Buxton lost playing time in the minors to injury, including a hand injury suffered during spring training and a concussion during his first game after being called up to the Twins' Class AA minor league team.
