A Brooklyn Park police officer who reportedly was assaulted by a man he was arresting has been identified as Sean Hyman.

Hyman, 28, who has been with police department since Jan. 6, 2014, is on paid administrative leave, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, which is investigating.

Lance Carr, 25, of Brooklyn Park, was charged Tuesday with first-degree assault for reportedly beating the officer and trying to take his gun on Nov. 29.

The incident began when the officer responded to a complaint of loud noise from a parked car. When the officer arrived, he found that there was a warrant for Carr's arrest.

The officer asked Carr to step out of the car, and Carr turned and threw a punch, police say. The punch missed, but Carr grabbed the officer and they both fell to the ground. A squad-car camera recorded Carr punching and elbowing the officer's head and using a chokehold on him. When he attempted to take the officer's gun, the weapon discharged, but no one was hit by the bullet, according to the Hennepin County's attorney's office.

Carr remains in the Hennepin County jail. His next court appearance is on Dec. 30.
