There will be a fee for some items. The fee schedule is posted on the city website at www.ci.scandia.mn.us.

Birding event coming to Arcola Mills in May Anyone interested in spotting more than 50 species of birds can attend the ninth annual birding event starting from the front porch of the Arcola mansion overlooking the St. Croix River.

Arcola Mills, about 8 miles north of Stillwater, is a lumber-era property with a Greek Revival house built in 1847. Trails lead to the adjoining forest and to the river.

The May 19 event, from 8 a.m.-noon, will include a continental breakfast. Some birders have donated "a buck a bird" for past fundraisers, but any amount is welcome, organizers said.

Species of birds observed in the past have included the Louisiana waterthrush, a relatively uncommon species because it favors the moving stream habitat at Arcola Mills.

Money raised will benefit the Arcola Mills Historical Foundation, which sponsors activities in the arts, nature, science and history. Those who attend are asked to contact Karen Eckman in advance at 651-483-8460 or at k.eckman@comcast.net.

Thousands expected at citywide garage sale The Woodbury Lions Club is holding its 35th annual garage sale May 10-12, an event that traditionally draws thousands of bargain hunters.

The sale will run from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. each day, with an estimated 700 garage sales registered, plus more garage sales piggybacking off of that but not registered, said Jason Egerstrom, a spokesman for the city.

Not only do shoppers get good deals while residents clear out unwanted items, but the city's restaurants, hotels, gas stations, stores and other businesses stay busy during the weekend, Egerstrom said. Street crews do not do repairs during the event so traffic can keep flowing, he said.
